Man walking away into a sunlit driveway from an unfinished car engine repair in an open garage, stepping back to clear his mind

Step Out So You Can Step Back In

You ever notice this?

You’re stuck on something. Can’t figure it out. Nothing’s clicking.

You step away.

Come back… and it’s right there.

It’s like something shifted. Same problem, different mind.

And that’s the part most of us fight.

We think staying on it longer is the answer. Push harder. Think deeper. Try to make it work.

But sometimes the move isn’t to stay in it.

It’s to step out.

I’ve seen this play out over and over.

Whether I’m writing, working through something personal, fixing something with my hands, or trying to make a decision. When I stay on it too long, I start losing it.

Clarity goes first.

What the hell am I doing?

Then patience.

The fuck is wrong with this shit?

God damn it.

And now I’m just there… spinning.

That’s when I’ve learned to step away.

Sometimes it’s a few minutes. Sometimes a couple of hours.

Sometimes it’s “fuck it,” and I leave it alone for the rest of the day.

I go and do something else. Take a walk. Run some errands. Move my body. Play the guitar. Do something that doesn’t take much thinking.

Not to escape it, even though I’m probably fuming at that moment.

Just to calm down. Give it space.

Because what I’ve noticed is this. When I come back, I’m not the same person that left it.

My mind is quieter.

The weight is gone.

And the thing that felt heavy… isn’t heavy anymore.

I’ll see something I didn’t see before. Or I’ll take a different angle without even trying. Sometimes the solution shows up right away. Sometimes I just know the next step.

Either way, it moves again.

That pause… stepping out… that does it for me.

Give yourself a little wiggle room when things get difficult.

Take a step back.

Let it breathe.

Go do something else for a bit. A few minutes, a few hours, a day if you need it.

Then come back.

More often than not, it’s right there waiting for you.

Same situation. Different mind.

And that’s usually all it needed.
